SUMMARY:Mindfulness for the Professionally Anxious
DESCRIPTION:Limited tickets available; click here to save your spot \n  \n\n\nDo you feel like everything will be ok if you “just get that one last thing done?” (And then the next “last thing” … and the next …)\n\n\n\nIn “Mindfulness for the Professionally Anxious\,” you’ll learn: \n\nThe source of obsessive thinking\, how it causes anxiety\, and why it’s not your fault (really!).\nScientifically-proven methods that break the cycle of fear and actually rewire your brain for peace.\nThe one powerful question that brings instant clarity.\nHow the “Totem Pole” technique calms your inner control freak.\n\n\n\nDo one or more of these questions resonate? \n\nDo you take your work home (and everywhere else) with you … in your head? Have you noticed that it doesn’t really help\, but you still can’t stop?\n\n\nDo other people somehow not seem as stressed as you feel?\n\n\nAre you pretty sure you could get it all together if life would just pause for\, say\, a freakin’ minute or two?\nDo the benefits of mindfulness or meditation sound great and all\, but you just can’t stop your thoughts and clear your mind?\n\n\n\nWho should attend? \nIf you answered “yes” to any of the questions above\, or if you’re just curious about mindfulness (or how to resolve human angst)\, this event is for you. \nNo prior experience is needed\, although even seasoned practitioners will likely find some new context for their practice! \n\n\nWho am I? \nHi. I’m Ron Levine from Mindfulness in Blue Jeans. \nEarly in my IT career\, I became housebound with clinical anxiety\, depression\, panic disorder\, and agoraphobia. When my doctor prescribed this “mindfulness” thing\, I wasn’t impressed. I figured I’d give it a quick try\, and when it inevitably failed we could move on to the REAL treatment. \nThat was over 20 years ago\, and I’m still doing this mindfulness thing. \nThis practice has changed my life. First\, I used these tools and techniques to break free from what was holding me back. Then\, I transferred my new skills to other parts of my life. I’ve built an incredibly successful IT career. As a musician\, I’ve traveled to perform at festivals. And now\, I lead practice groups\, corporate events\, and workshops like this so others may experience these life-changing benefits as well. \n\n\nWhat we’ll do \nWe’ll begin with a talk about the true origins of our anxiety\, followed by an overview of how to apply mindfulness using the “Totem Pole” technique. A guided sitting session (about 25 minutes) will follow\, and we’ll wrap up with a journaling and Q+A period. \n\n\nInvestment levels \nLimited tickets are available at three investment levels; please select the one most appropriate for you. Those with the means and generosity to choose the benefactor rate make it possible to offer tickets at the scholarship rate so that everyone has an opportunity to attend. \n\n\nWhat others are saying \n“I’m still enjoying every day with an expansive sense of total release & freedom. The transformation awes me every day! As time passes\, I realize that unlike some of the strategies I employed\, its initial\, astounding impact was not just a temporary boost. So\, I can genuinely say it changed my life!! ” — Elisa\, Wareham\, MA \n“I feel like I just had a weight lifted from my chest and I can feel the space that was just created inside of me … I’m overwhelmed with joy and I know what to do. ” — Ashley\, Denver\, CO \n“You made this practice very approachable\, thank you.” — Melissa\, Hanover\, MA \n“I love the pace and tone and clear guidance.” — Parminder\, London\, United Kingdom \n“To say that this experience has been insightful\, and it has\, would be the highest compliment I could give.” — Seeker\, Cedar City\, UT \n\n\n“Mindfulness for the Professionally Anxious” is presented by Ron Levine from Mindfulness in Blue Jeans\, a 20+ year practitioner of mindfulness and insight meditation. \nAfter actively denying his own trauma for eight years\, Ron’s life finally fell apart in a crippling heap of anxiety\, depression\, panic disorder\, and agoraphobia in early 1998. While on short-term disability and unable to even leave his house\, he was introduced to anapanasati (mindfulness of breathing) and vipassana (mindfulness-based insight meditation)\, which formed the basis of a profound recovery built on daily practice on and off the cushion. \nWith backgrounds in social psychology\, information technology\, and yoga\, Ron emphasizes a grounded and methodical results-based approach toward discovering inner freedom. \n“Mindfulness in Blue Jeans … because enlightenment doesn’t care if you’re wearing yoga pants.”

SUMMARY:How To Be Damn Sure Your Practice Went Off The Rails
DESCRIPTION:I read a fairly mind-blowing article recently that I feel compelled to share and discuss. Frankly\, I’m still sorting out how to approach this topic\, so I’ll refrain from elaborating further here. \nThis session will follow our standard format: a short talk followed by a 30 minute sit and a Q+A period. \n**LOCATION**We’ll be meeting at the Lucia Mastrangelo Meeting Room on the second floor of the Watertown library at 2:15. Feel free to bring cushions\, pillows\, etc. for our sitting\, and there are chairs available if that’s preferred. \nLooking forward to another great event!

SUMMARY:"If You're Going Through Hell\, Keep Going"
DESCRIPTION:Many insights from my early mindfulness training showed me the way through my darkest days\, and they still form the foundation for my practice today. In this session\, I’ll share some of these; as usual\, we’ll follow with a sitting for about 30 minutes\, and then have a Q+A period. \nThis event will take place in the Skylight Studio at the Watertown Center for Healing Arts. Please use the 22 Mount Auburn St. entrance (not the Spring St. entrance) and come up the stairs\, and we will be in the last door on the left just before the restrooms. \nThere’s plenty of parking in the lot on Spring St.\, as well as street parking on Mount Auburn St. and a small lot on a short side street on the first right after the WCHA entrance (when heading toward Watertown Square). Feel free to bring your own cushion\, use one of the ones already provided\, or use a chair. \nI’m looking forward to sharing and sitting with you all once again!

SUMMARY:Mindfulness 101: "Am I Doing This Right?"
DESCRIPTION:In this updated version of our very first Meetup event\, we’ll get back to basics about what we’re doing — and not doing — as part of a mindfulness meditation practice. This session will be a great introduction for new practitioners and the merely curious\, as well as an opportunity for experienced (or lapsed 😉 ) meditators to refocus. \n**LOCATION**This event will take place in the Charles River Room at the Watertown Center for Healing Arts. Please use the 17 Spring St. entrance (NOT the 22 Mount Auburn St. entrance) — there’s a large parking lot on that side for CVS and other businesses. Once you come in that entrance\, just go up the stairs and we’re in the large room next to the small kitchen area. \nFeel free to bring your own cushion; there will also be various blankets\, bolsters\, and chairs available. \nI’m looking forward to sitting with you all once again!

SUMMARY:Pitfall! (Mindfulness and Insight Meditation Traps)
DESCRIPTION:Like any path worth walking\, our spiritual journeys are fraught with traps. New practitioners often encounter confusion from common paradoxes\, and experienced meditators discover new (and increasingly sneaky!) tarpits as practice deepens. In this session\, we’ll examine a few of these fun little hurdles and how to skillfully navigate them. As usual\, we’ll open with discussion on the topic\, sit for about 30 minutes\, and then have a Q+A period. \n**LOCATION**This event will take place in the Charles River Room at the Watertown Center for Healing Arts. SUMMARY:Shattering Attachment
DESCRIPTION:A prominent mindfulness teacher once wrote that if he had to distill the Buddha’s entire teaching down to one sentence\, it would be “attach to nothing as me or mine.” Years ago\, a shift in perspective about attachment altered my focus and dramatically increased my progress with this critical element of practice. In this session\, I’ll share the insight that led to that shift and guide a seated meditation based upon it. \nWe’ll be meeting at the Lucia Mastrangelo Meeting Room on the second floor of the Watertown library at 2:15. Feel free to bring cushions\, pillows\, etc. for our sitting\, and there are chairs available if that’s preferred. \nThe format will be similar to our previous meetups: some quick intros\, a brief talk called “Shattering Attachment\,” a 30ish-minute sitting\, and time for Q+A and general discussion. \nLooking forward to another great event!

SUMMARY:Revealing Inner Peace
DESCRIPTION:Register here: Revealing Inner Peace\n  \nAre you your own drill sergeant in an army of one? Do you feel endless pressure to be “good enough?” Are you ready to start letting that go? \n  \nWe often gravitate toward self-loathing rather than self-compassion. For example: \n\nDo you berate yourself for relatively minor things\, or long ago events?\nDo you feel like you treat yourself worse than you treat everyone else?\n Does your mind feel more like a war zone than a safe haven?\nAre you motivated more by fear than love?\nHas anyone (including you!) suggested easing up on yourself?\nDo you feel the need for constant inner vigilance or control?\n\n  \nYou’re not alone. More importantly\, you’re not permanently stuck with this. \n  \nSave your spot for this workshop to learn: \n\nThe sources of your negative self-thinking\nThe dysfunctional “logic” those thoughts follow\nWhere to break the vicious cycle that gets created\nHow to use one simple mindfulness practice to reveal your inner peace\n\n  \nThe insights shared and practiced in this session come from years of painstaking work. You don’t have to re-invent the wheel to discover the structure of this thought pattern … or how to make it implode. \nEarly-bird discounted tickets are available at Revealing Inner Peace\, and your peace awaits within. (Really. It’s there\, and probably closer than you think.) Namaste! \n  \n  \nWhat people say about our sessions: \nHis voice invites immediate connection and his use of anecdotes & metaphors makes absorption of his teachings enjoyable. Really looking forward to more talks! — Elisa\, Wareham\, MA \nI feel like I just had a weight lifted from my chest and I can feel the space that was just created inside of me. — Ashley\, Denver\, CO \nWow\, that was fantastic. Thank you Ron for an amazing experience. — Erin\, Los Angeles\, CA \nYou made this practice very approachable\, thank you. — Melissa\, Hanover\, MA \nInsightful practice. I appreciate Ron’s approach to sharing his wisdom with us. Great blend of story\, technique and sitting. — Walt\, Ashland\, MA \nThat was profound. A life changer. — Imelda\, Austin\, TX \nA welcomed prod to shift perspective. Thank you! — Susan\, Ashburnham\, MA \nI love the pace and tone and clear guidance. — Parminder\, London\, United Kingdom \nTo say that this experience has been insightful\, and it has\, would be the highest compliment I could give. — Seeker\, Cedar City\, UT \n  \n  \nPresented by Ron Levine from Mindfulness in Blue Jeans\, a 20+ year practitioner of mindfulness and insight meditation. \nAfter actively denying his own trauma for eight years\, Ron’s life finally fell apart in a crippling heap of anxiety\, depression\, panic disorder\, and agoraphobia in early 1998. SUMMARY:The Simple Trick to Reaching Acceptance: Condensed Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We hear a lot about “acceptance” and “letting things go.” We hear a lot less about HOW to actually do it effectively\, and our efforts often leave us feeling like we’re banging our heads against a wall. Instead of freeing us\, trying to let go ironically becomes yet another thing we have to carry. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll cover all the critical aspects of discovering acceptance\, including: \n* The crucial starting point (which is usually missed)* Recognizing what acceptance really is* What blocks us from acceptance* The “Shatterpoint” technique to remove that block* Why acceptance is actually much easier than we think \nEarly-bird tickets (available thru 6/20) are $15 and Meetup member receive 25% off; register here and use the code “MEETUP”: \nhttps://reachingacceptance.eventbrite.com \n(After 6/20\, tickets are $22; the 25% off code will still be valid.) \nWhat others have said about this session: \nThank you for a WONDERFUL WONDERFUL\, WONDERFUL meditation! Your insight into resistance and your advice into relating to it is profound. Thank you so much!Janet\, CA\, USA \nLearned so much with this meditation. I have a completely different perspective on what I thought I was accepting. With peace and gratitude Ron for sharing your experience and wisdom. Namaste! 🌼🙏Julie\, MA\, USA \nYes! Thank you. 🙏🏼 This insightful approach is exactly what I was missing. Grateful. 💝Bon Marie\, CA\, USA

Once you come in that entrance\, just go up the stairs and we’re in the large room next to the small kitchen area. \nFeel free to bring your own cushion; there will also be various blankets\, bolsters\, and chairs available. \nI’m looking forward to sitting with you all once again!

SUMMARY:Hey. Who Do You Think You Are?
DESCRIPTION:To truly alleviate suffering\, we must confront our own concept — and misconceptions — about our “self.” This session will pose some thoughts and questions to begin exploring this huge and and often confusing (but critical!) topic. \nWe’ll be meeting at the Lucia Mastrangelo Meeting Room on the second floor of the Watertown library at 2:15. Feel free to bring cushions\, pillows\, etc. for our sitting\, and there are chairs available if that’s preferred. \nThe format will be similar to our previous meetups: some quick intros\, a brief talk called “Who Do You Think You Are\,” a 30ish-minute sitting\, and time for Q+A and general discussion. \nLooking forward to another great event!

SUMMARY:From Worrier to Warrior: Mindfulness for the Professionally Anxious
DESCRIPTION:Anxiety sucks. Literally. It siphons your energy until exhaustion feels “normal.” Do any of the questions in this quiz sound familiar? \n1. Do you take your work home (and everywhere else) with you … in your head?\n2. Have you noticed that it doesn’t really help\, but you still can’t stop?\n3. The “Sunday Night Blues.” Know what I mean?\n4. Do other people somehow not seem quite as stressed as you feel\, even when they say they are?\n5. Are you pretty sure you could get it all together if life would just pause for\, say\, a freakin’ minute or two?\n6. Do the benefits of mindfulness or meditation sound great and all\, but you just can’t stop your thoughts and clear your mind? \nScoring: One point for each “yes” answer\n0: Check for a pulse\n1-6: Please proceed to the next section\n\nIn “Mindfulness for the Professionally Anxious\,” you’ll learn the following:\nThe source of your often-maddening human condition\, and why it’s not your fault. (Really. You’re NOT broken.)\nSimple\, practical tools for dealing with said human condition — and the counter-intuitive but effective focus areas for their application.\nA basic explanation of the science behind how and why they work. (This isn’t a nuclear physics class; I only use words I can actually pronounce.)\nHow to calm your inner control freak.\nAccelerating inner and outer breakthroughs using the power of “shatterpoints.” \nOh\, and you’ll get to practice a few mindfulness techniques to see what all the fuss is about!\n\n“From Housebound to Healer”\nHi. I’m Ron from Mindfulness in Blue Jeans.\nEarly in my IT career\, I became housebound with clinical anxiety\, depression\, panic disorder\, and agoraphobia. When my doctor prescribed this “mindfulness” thing\, I wasn’t particularly impressed. I figured I’d give it a quick try\, and when it inevitably failed we could move on to the REAL treatment. \nThat was over 20 years ago. I’m still waiting for that failure. \nIn the meantime\, I’ve transferred my profoundly life-changing skills from the clinical world to the working world. Many of the keys I used to free myself from my jail at home also unlock our daily mental prisons. After all\, aren’t obsessive thoughts and runaway emotions (not to mention the fatigue they cause) common to both? \nYou don’t have to be where I was to experience the misery described by this great Mark Twain quote: “I have been through some terrible things in my life\, some of which actually happened.” \nHere’s another quote: “The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” It’s probably well past time to stop giving these vicious cycles a rent-free room in your psyche. Instead of basing important decisions on irrational emotions\, let your innate wisdom and intelligence guide your thoughts\, actions\, and relationships. And good LORD … let’s finally make impostor syndrome yesterday’s news. \nModern scientific research now shows how you can literally change your physical brain structure using these ancient techniques. I’ve done it\, and if I can do it\, anyone can. (I’m not special\, despite what my mom says.) If you can breathe\, you can do this. \nYou don’t get paid for the time you spend worrying outside of the office walls. You will never be compensated for the lost sleep and stress-related physical ailments that result from sustained anxiety. (Stress\, by the way\, is designed to be a helpful one-and-done internal alerting mechanism\, not the destructive chronic condition we’ve come to accept as “Tuesday.”) \nYet most of us operate this way\, which is actually good news for you; when you move from worrier to warrior\, not only does life become more enjoyable\, but you have a portable toolset that puts you ahead of the pack personally and professionally. \nAnd let’s face it … you wouldn’t have read this far unless you’re ready\, willing\, and (trust me on this) able to make a change.\n\nWhat others are saying: \n“I couldn’t halt the uninvited\, relentless tape loop of thoughts consuming me. After an ‘imprisonment’ of over 2000 days — with just that one session — I’m still enjoying every day with an expansive sense of total release & freedom. The transformation awes me every day! As time passes\, I realize that unlike some of the strategies I employed\, its initial\, astounding impact was not just a temporary boost. So\, I can genuinely say it changed my life!!”\n— Elisa\, Wareham\, MA” \nI have been walking in circles for months over the same few pieces of my life that consistently trip me up … at the same time every year. I feel like I just had a weight lifted from my chest and I can feel the space that was just created inside of me from listening to this. I’m overwhelmed with joy and I know what to do. ”\n— Ashley\, Denver\, CO \n“You made this practice very approachable\, thank you.”\n— Melissa\, Hanover\, MA\n\nMindfulness in Blue Jeans … because enlightenment doesn’t care if you’re wearing yoga pants.

SUMMARY:Calming Your Inner Control Freak
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever tried to control a situation or a person (including yourself!) in an attempt to increase your own happiness or freedom\, only to find that your efforts were wasted … or even made things worse? Without understanding the true roots (and ironic limitations) of control\, we rarely succeed; yet\, it is so common to try to find safety and comfort this way\, we often don’t even realize we’re doing it. No wonder we feel frustrated and ineffective! \nThis session will include a 20 minute talk providing fresh context\, perspective\, and a couple of surprises about our “control cycles\,” followed by a seated group meditation focused on finding a deep inner relief from this pervasive challenge. \nThis event will take place in the Skylight Studio at the Watertown Center for Healing Arts. Please use the 22 Mount Auburn St. entrance and come up the stairs\, and we will be in the last door on the left just before the restrooms.

SUMMARY:Living Without Suffering ... Off the Cushion
DESCRIPTION:Are you finding difficulty — and discouragement — with establishing a regular meditation practice? Or perhaps you’ve discovered some success with meditation on the cushion\, but somehow that progress seems to stay with the cushion after you resume interacting with the world … and other people! 😉 \nSitting in meditation is a wonderful and integral part of our practice\, but we don’t sit on a cushion to get good at sitting on a cushion; this is an active practice designed to develop skills and insight to improve how we ACTUALLY live. This is why the “L” in my MINDFUL Spiral of Growth stands for “living\,” and this talk and sitting session will provide the foundation for developing the practice that the Buddha taught 2500 years ago: living without suffering. \nThis event will take place in the Skylight Studio at the Watertown Center for Healing Arts. Please use the 22 Mount Auburn St. entrance and come up the stairs\, and we will be in the last door on the left just before the restrooms. \nThere’s plenty of parking in the lot on Spring St.\, as well as street parking on Mount Auburn St. and a small lot on a short side street on the first right after the WCHA entrance (when heading toward Watertown Square). SUMMARY:The Most Powerful Question Ever Asked
DESCRIPTION:Many questions come up when we practice. “Am I doing this right?” “Is this working?” “When’s lunch?” \nIn all my years of practice\, there’s one question I’ve heard that stands out for its unwavering ability to snap things into focus\, invite self-discovery\, and spark deep shifts. This session will have a shorter talk than usual so that we may have extra time to sit with what this powerful question brings up — and perhaps releases — for each of us. \n**LOCATION CHANGE**This event will take place in the Skylight Studio at the Watertown Center for Healing Arts. It’s about two blocks from the library where we’ve met in the past; for those who joined us on January 26th at the Watertown Center\, the room is on the other side of the building\, so please use the 22 Mount Auburn St. entrance (NOT the Spring St. entrance we used on the 26th). Upon entering\, come up the stairs and we will be in the last door on the left\, just before the restrooms. \nThere’s plenty of parking in the lot on Spring St.\, as well as street parking on Mount Auburn St. and a small lot on a short side street on the first right after the WCHA entrance (when heading toward Watertown Square). SUMMARY:We Are That Which We Seek. Wait\, What?
DESCRIPTION:At a retreat I attended this past weekend\, the teacher shared this quote: “we are that which we seek.” During the Q+A at the end\, a young woman in the front row asked what this meant. (The teacher said that he wouldn’t dream of depriving her of the reward of working it out for herself. 🙂 ) I arrived at two of my own conclusions; my hunch is that at least one of them is what the quote’s originator meant. \nI invite everyone to contemplate its meaning over the next week or so\, and we’ll discuss our interpretations at this event. (If you just want to be a fly on the wall for the discussion\, that’s fine too; there’s no mandatory participation\, it will be completely free-form.) We’ll also have our customary sitting and time for general discussion. \n**LOCATION CHANGE**This event will take place in the Charles River Room at the Watertown Center for Healing Arts. It’s about two blocks from the library where we’ve been meeting. The room is most easily accessible via the 17 Spring St. entrance (NOT the 22 Mount Auburn St. entrance) — there’s a large parking lot on that side for CVS and other businesses\, and once you come in that entrance\, just go up the stairs and the Charles River Room is right there next to the small kitchen area. \n**AND\, AMENITY CHANGE**This site has cushions as well as chairs! 😉 Feel free to bring your own cushion\, use one of the ones already provided\, or grab a chair. \nI’m looking forward to sharing and sitting with you all once again!

SUMMARY:Why We Fail At Acceptance\, And How To ACTUALLY Let Go
DESCRIPTION:We hear a lot about “acceptance” and “letting things go.” We hear a lot less about HOW to actually do it effectively\, and our efforts often leave us feeling like we’re banging our heads against a wall. Instead of freeing us\, acceptance and letting go end up on that big pile of things we figure we’ll sort out “some day.” \nMy entire relationship — and skill! — with these concepts changed suddenly and dramatically several years ago. The insights that led to this transformation will be the focus of this event. \n**PLEASE NOTE these meeting location and attendee limit changes for this event.**We will again meet at the Watertown library\, but we will be in the Watertown Savings Bank Meeting Room on the first floor; it’s down the short hallway on the left after the main desk. Since this is a larger room\, no attendee limit is necessary (so bring friends 😉 ). Feel free to bring cushions\, pillows\, etc. for our sitting\, and there are chairs available if that’s preferred. \nThe format will be similar to our previous meetups: some quick intros\, a brief talk called “Why We Fail At Acceptance\, And How To ACTUALLY Let Go\,” a 20ish-minute sitting\, and time for Q+A and general discussion. \nI’m looking forward to sharing and sitting with you all once again!
